A Testament to Perseverance

Deanna Jordan is a 28 year old single mother of 3 young boys. She had her first son at 18, and in less than four years, gave birth to two more boys. Deanna also just graduated from UCLA this past May with not one, not two, but THREE degrees, showing others that no matter what you are told, with the right level of dedication, education is not inaccessible.

In 5.5 years, Deanna was able to earn two Bachelor’s degrees AND a Master’s Degree in African American Studies from a nationally ranked institution. In a recent interview with CBS Los Angeles, Jordan states that her inspiration was providing her sons with a legacy of academic excellence that they could one day emulate.

When asked how she was able to accomplish so much, this inspirational scholar┬áreplied, “You can’t really succeed unless you fail, and I failed a lot of times, but it was my persistence and my willingness never to give up.”

Deanna is the founder of the Compton Pipeline Taskforce, where she and other UCLA students volunteer their time and services to improve the academic systems at Compton schools. She is currently employed in the city’s mayor’s office and aims to return to school to earn her law degree and become a district attorney.

What an inspiration.
