20 year old Staten Island native Brian Hogan-Gary used a local dunk contest in his neighborhood to honor Eric Garner, the fellow Staten Islander and father of four who was killed earlier this month at after being put in a chokehold by the NYPD.
This past Friday night, the Under the Lights basketball tournament was held in Dongan Hills. Tournament owner, Joel Soto, reached out to local police in the area to see if they would be interested in helping out for the dunk competition. The officers sought and received approval from their commanding officers and parked their squad car under the net of the basket.
Brian proceeded to take off his jersey, revealing a shirt underneath that read “R.I.P. Eric Garner”. He then propelled himself from just inside the 3 point line, slamming the ball through the hoop while the officers turned the car lights on and sounded their sirens – the crowd went wild.
Garner’s death at the hands of police force was caught on tape and went viral earlier this month. It happened on July 17th during the officers’ attempt to arrest him for selling untaxed cigarettes. Since, multiple rallies and vigils have been held in his honor and his family is seeking a case against the NYPD.
