Broadway Unites to Honor Eric Garner

In Times Square in New York City, on Tuesday, July 29th, 100 of Broadway’s biggest actors, musicians, directors, stylists, producers and more gathered in a beautiful act of solidarity to honor the late Eric Garner, whose life was cut short just twelve days before while in police custody.

In the Youtube video, which can be seen below, the large group, decked out in black tees and jeans, harmonize in a solemn hum while  poet Daniel J. Watts recited a spirited poem entitled I Can’t Breathe; referencing Garner’s saddening last words as he died in a chokehold.

On July 17th, police officers in Staten Island attempted to arrest 43 year old Garner for illegally selling cigarettes. After he refused to be  handcuffed, officers put him in a chokehold, all captured by a nearby onlooker. The father of six can be heard pleading for air and stating he can’t breathe, yet the officers ignore his pleas.

The participants include members from big Broadway hits including The Lion King, Kinky Boots, Rocky, Rent, Jersey Boys, Book of Mormon and Newsies.
