It seems like Lifetime is making a name for itself in the biopic arena. The women’s lifestyle and entertainment network announced earlier this summer that Angela Bassett will be directing and America’s Next Top Model’s Yaya DaCosta will be starring in it’s Whitney Houston biopic. Following this, they have just announced the Disney Channel star, Zendaya Coleman (Shake It Up) will be portraying Aaliyah Haughton in their upcoming biopic.
The movie will be based on the best-seller Aaliyah: More Than A Woman, by former Time magazine music editor Christopher Farley. Coleman, a superstar in the tween and teen world, who has also ventured into music with a hit single, Replay, seems to have the acting and singing capabilities to play the late songstress.
According to Lifetime, the film “follows the beautiful and talented performer’s inspirational journey, from her debut on Star Search at the age of 10 to the challenges she faced during her rise to become the princess of R&B.”
While many of Aaliyah’s fans and the general public seem to be very interested in the upcoming flick, others are upset with the casting and believe there were more suitable options than “the first light skinned and skinny black girl they could find.” Not since Selena has their really been a biopic where the actor was seemingly identical to the star they portrayed. Think the focus should be on the acting capability and the talent to bring the essence of the star back to life.
