You may remember back in 2012 in Florida, the story of the shooting murder of an unarmed 17 year old black boy by a 47 year old white man. That boy’s name was Jordan Davis and he was shot and killed by Michael Dunn over a seemingly ridiculous argument about music volume. Dunn shot into an SUV containing Davis and three of his teenage friends after they refused to lower the volume of their music.
While the jury declared a mistrial on the first degree murder charges he faced for actually murdering Jordan (really not sure how the hell that happened), they got their lives and heads together enough to find Dunn guilty of three counts of second degree attempted murder.
This past Friday, he was sentenced to 90 years in jail plus another 15 for firing into an occupied vehicle. I guess once in a blue our justice system actually works. While we should celebrate the fact that justice was served here let’s remember this should be a right we get and not a privilege and until this becomes a constant, to the point that it discourages this type of senseless violence, we still have a long way to go.
RIP Jordan Davis.
