CBS Sports reports that on Monday the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) elected Michele Roberts as its new executive director, finally filling the spot after an 18 month vacancy.
Roberts, a Washington, DC trial lawyer with the number 4 law firm in the world, Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom, makes history as the first woman to head a men’s professional athletic association in the US. Her law firm’s service as outside counsel for the NBA and her extensive track record of success, make her appointment all the more logical.
She joins the association at a critical time, as dissent is running rampant. With the NBPA’s 2011 loss to the league for collecting bargaining and the chaos surrounding the Los Angeles Clippers and Donald Sterling.
Given her years of winning some of these hardest trials in the courtroom, we are sure that Michele will meet this new challenge head on and come out on top as usual.
Congratulations to the NBPA and to Michele!
