Starting next week, someone will be giving Uber a run for their money. Starting September 16, a new mobile app called SheRides will provide female riders with the means to have a female driver take them to their destination.
The company will launch with 50 TLC-licensed female drivers who will provide their services for female-only customers. Like Uber, fees will be collected via the app, using a debit or credit card and payments will then be sent to the driver.
Launched by entrepreneurial mother of 2, Stella Mateo, the mission of this app is to provide female customers with a more comfortable environment where they need not worry about being hit on or the possibility of being assaulted (unless their driver is Charlize Theron from Monster). Mateo has hopes of expanding this service to female drivers outside of New York in the near future, with plans to add drivers in Washington, Miami, Chicago and other major cities.
Competitive rates, an extra layer of safety and the chance to support a female-owned business that employs women in a conventionally male field? SheRides is definitely on the path to success.
