Super Condom Will Stop Spread of STIs

According to a recentĀ PolicyMicĀ article, a new revolutionary condom that kills almost all sexually transmitted infections, including herpes, HIV and chlamydia, i one step closer to hitting the market…at least in Australia.

Ansell, the Australian prophylactic company, will manufacture a condom laced with the antimicrobial VivaGel lubricant. Australia’s version of the FDA, the Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration, gave the product a Conformity Assessment Certification, meaning it can be on the market within months. The gel has been proven effective in killing 99.9% of STIs.

STIs, not to be confused with STDs (the difference is that the D stands for disease and is an infection with actual symptoms), are on the rise in Australia. In the past few years, HIV diagnoses have risen 10% and 2013 set a record with more cases diagnosed than any other year over the past 20 years. 1 in 8 Australian adults over 25 is affected by genital herpes.

STIs are also on the rise in the US. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), STIs account for an estimated $16 billion of the healthcare system annually because of the 20 million new cases each year.

Across the nation, there are roughly 110 million people infected.
