This Man Went From Jail to Opening NYC’s In Demand Hip Hop Inspired Ice Cream Shop

Mikey Likes It, located in the East  Village of New York, has recently become one of THE go-to spots in NYC if you want some uniquely flavored and named artisanal ice cream.

Menu options include Pretty in Pink (strawberry ice cream, strawberries, balsamic vinegar and pepper…yea not sure how it sounds either, but apparently it’s delicious) and D’Usse de Leche, which is his own version of dulce de leche, made with Jay Z’s cognac, D’Usse and sold at Jay’s sports club, the 40/40.

36 year old Michael Cole, who makes sure his shop reflects his upbringing during the era of 90’s hip hop, was once a neighborhood drug dealer, yet after being arrested and serving six months of jail time, he had a change of heart and decided to focus his entrepreneurial talents to something more legitimate.

He took his ice cream making skills, which his late aunt taught him when he was a child, developed one-of-a-kind recipes and entered a contest sponsored by Defy Ventures, which aims to help ex-cons develop entrepreneurial skills. Through Defy, he was fortunate enough to meet Jay Z and raise enough funding to purchase a store location for his business.

Now in business for a little over a year, word of Cole’s shop has spread like wildfire, with celebrities making sure they stop by when they’re in town and executives from Google, Reebok and Adidas showing interest in pursing partnerships with the brand.

Cole is a prime example of not letting your past define you and making a conscious decision to use your talents for good.

If you are in New York, make sure you stop by Mikey Likes It and give it a try!
