Viola Davis is the newest inductee into Shondaland, where all things magical, heart racing and addictive come from Queen Shonda Rhimes (one word…SCANDAL).
Viola will be starring in the upcoming American legal drama series, How to Get Away with Murder, executive produced by Rhimes and written by esteemed writer, Peter Nowalk. She has been cast in the role of Annalise Dewitt, a law professor and renowned criminal defense attorney. DeWitt and five of her law students become entangled in a murder plot that will put all their lives in danger.
Davis is also in talks to star in Michael Mann’s upcoming untitled cyber crime thriller, which is set to start filming in China next month. This comes after filming for two other films, Prisoners, also starring Hugh Jackman, Jake Gyllenhaal and Terrence Howard and Ender’s Game, with Harrison Ford, Abigail Breslin and Sir Ben Kingsley.
Last weekend, Viola could be find in Florida at the Walt Disney World resort, helping them kick off their summer-long celebration of the 20th anniversary of The Lion King: Harambe Nights, featuring a new theatrical production and late night street party. As the celebrity narrator for the June 7th premiere of The Lion King:Concert in the Wild, Davis brought a certain sparkle and charm to her stories of Simba’s journey to manhood.
In addition, this past may, Davis returned to her alma mater, The Julliard School, where she received an Honorary Doctorate in Fine Arts as recognition for her work and successes in film.
Viola is clearly on the rise, showing she can play much more than just a maid (since maids, slaves, etc. seem to be the roles for which we receive awards…insert side eye here). We can’t wait to see what’s up next for her.
How to Get Away with Murder will be airing on Thursday nights right after Scandal so start getting your Friday morning excuses for calling out of work together because none of us will be going to sleep after that.
